People do not want their reality "curated" by power centers such as corporations and governments. People are awakening to the toxicity of systems that are funded by advertising revenue. The future of chat, microblogging, multimedia publication, and other Internet social functions belongs to distributed systems that are funded by, and thus operated to serve, the people who use them. That future belongs to those systems that are worthy of trust and that can be verified to be worthy of trust, such as open source systems.
